Cisco’s Top Ten Collaboration Trends for 2010 PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 23 July 2010 00:00

Although a little old (Jan 2010), this article by Cisco really caught my eye, especially since it corroborates something I have discerned in the enterprise messaging and collaboration market. It is Trend #1 that really held my attention, and has also been validated since the article was written. Here it is:-

Trend #1 Enterprise collaboration suites converge – today’s disparate text (IM, email, social software), voice (telephony) and video (desktop, room-based and telepresence) solutions begin to converge this year as leading vendors release combined solutions promising further productivity and total cost of ownership gains. I believe early adoption by industry leaders will begin in the middle of the year and accelerate in the second half of the year.

This trend has been since validated, as Google Apps, Microsoft BPOS, and Cisco's own WebEx suite are headed in the same direction, as are smaller players such as the HyperOffice Collaboration Suite. These suites integrate business email service (messaging), with collaboration tools (document management, intranet workspaces, forums, surveys etc) and web conferencing tools. If this continues, the demarcation between the messaging and collaboration market will surely blur, and a blog like this one will equally be talking about the collaboration market.

Here are the other collaboration trends for you:-

2.  Video will go mainstream  in businesses as travel becomes expensive

3. Intercompany communication and collaboration will increase, and companies will increasingly need to connect with entities beyond company boundaries.

4. Smart phone acceleration continues

6. Consumerization of IT – a trend towards employee-directed technology spending

5. Emerging third world markets will accelerate growth of the collaboration market.

7. In addition to the smart phone adoption, an increasing number of mobile computing devices will support employee collaboration. The fourth and fifth generation of netbooks will be released, offering, amongst other features, larger screens and native dual-boot for reduced time-to-collaboration. (think iPad)

8. Voice and video stream interpretation

9. Policy – organizations will look to standardize the application of policy rules across the enterprise i

10. Increased customer collaboration
