Microsoft must be rubbing its hands in glee. Continuing with its tradition of high profile outages, a bug in Gmail deleted the information in thousands of user accounts, roughly affecting .08% (a figure later revised to .02%) of Gmail users. But considering the huge user base of Gmail, even .02% is a whole lot! Although the accounts were restored later on, it was enough for enough negative publicity to go around, and for Google bashers to have a gala time. This is almost like fate playing a cruel trick on Google, because this comes just days after Google announced that it is upping Google Apps' uptime guarantee. In spite of making great efforts to improve its image, Gmail has had a history of outages and problems. This again puts in question its ability to position itself as a serious solution, one which can serve the needs of the business market. Maybe you should be looking at a Google Apps alternative?
